The mass production of traditional protein (beef, poultry & seafood) has numerous negative impacts on the environment. These impacts include increases in greenhouse gas production, and the pollution of water sources and soil.
A solution proposed to this issue is ‘Entomophagy’, defined as ‘the human use of insects as food’. The advantages to the production of insects for consumption include: they are more affordable to produce than traditional livestock, contain up to 3x more protein than beef, require less energy to produce, and grow much faster than traditional livestock. The system I have designed is a modular habitarium, to effectively grow grasshoppers for consumption, for use in commercial, industrial, domestic and workplace environments.
