As a rock lobster fisherman at the Abrolhos Islands, knowledge of the surrounding reefs is paramount. The site of the infamous Batavia Wreck, the reefs can be extremely dangerous.
Although nautical charts outline the general reefs/channels, prior experience in the area is still required.
By having all boat’s soundars and GPS systems linked together, the soundar reading can be coupled with the GPS location and specific depths can be recorded. This will allow for much more accurate charts to be developed.
Applications for these new accurate charts can include improving saftey and awareness on the water. It will also make locating optimum fishing ground and conditions much easier. This technolgy can also have applications on dry land with contours and surveying.
